SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS MADE POSSIBLE BY FUNDRAISING FOR CANCER

Prevention

WellnessFits, a comprehensive workplace wellness program was

launched with League Financial, the City of Nanaimo, the Capital

Regional District and Kardel Consulting.

 

Tanning is Out was implemented in six schools on Vancouver Island.

Some 1,700 high school students pledged to be tan-free.

 

We successfully forged new collaborative relationships with the

municipalities of Saanich, Central Saanich, View Royal and Colwood to

distribute postcards to residents on the dangers of asbestos exposure.

 

A cigarette butt clean-up was held at UVIC. Students collected

over 2,000 butts in 45 minutes and raised awareness about UVIC’s

smoke-free campus policy. Another clean up occurred at Thetis Lake

to raise awareness about the need for a smoking ban in parks and

playgrounds.

 

The Society supported the annual Traditional Foods Conference which

attracted over 500 people from First Nations communities throughout

Vancouver Island. Participants came to celebrate their culture, and

learn about healthy eating in culturally relevant ways.

Giving

We are proud of our long relationships with several independent

fundraisers across the Island. Dedicated groups like the 17-year strong

Alex Campbell Conquer Cancer Classic and the Cowichan Golfers

Against Cancer that just celebrated 25 years of giving to the Society.

Wells War Against Cancer in Nanaimo fundraise 6 months a year and

donate on average $20,000 annually to the Society. The Dashwood

Volunteer Fire Department in Qualicum has hosted head shaves for

17 years and have donated over $40,000 to date.
